June 2005

Apparently there’s a Tampa based Drinking Liberally “chapter” meeting at New World Brewery tomorrow…

Found out about it here.

I don’t think this has as much steam as the Farscape or Firefly campaigns, but here it is none the less…I’d love to see Carnivale come back.
Save Carnivale

Okay, not really. But I have to say I’m a bit disappointed in the aborbency of Pampers newborn swaddlers. Multiple times when he’s either been getting fed, or just had his diaper changed and was lying on his back, we’d suddenly notice he’s all wet. Apparently the Pampers newborn diapers rely heavily on gravity. Which is odd if you think about the fact that newborns can’t hold their head up so are more likely to be laying down (in a pool of urine if they’re wearing these diapers) than anything else.

The power came back around 10am this morning. That’s right 10 A.M. We went 18 hours without power. Luckily the house was nice and cool and it never got too bad during the night. When the power came back though, I lost a network card in the FreeBSD router. I swapped the card out with one of the spares I have lying around, and….problems. All the internal mcahines aren’t getting an IP address, or they get one and then lose it soon after. 5 hours later I get around to resetting the switches.
TA-DA! Yeah, I know. I should always start with resetting everything. I just wish they put “RESET” buttons on things. It’s a moronic design that I have to unplug something to get it to reset.

So, my power’s out, been out for about 1.5 hours now.

I’d like to send a big THANK YOU to the neighbors who are kind enough not to encrypt their wireless networks.

Apparently we’re the only house (at least that’s reported it), with no power on our street.

It’s starting to get toasty…good thing it happened in the evening and not mid morning.

So, the past two nights I’ve attended the first meetings of the cast for The March of the Kitefliers. This is going to be fantastic. That’s really all I can say. The cast is starting off with a great energy and attitude towards the whole project. The set promises to be incredible, and the director understands the plays intent better than any writer could dream.

With that said, I encourage all Tampa residents to buy tickets now. In fact, give them as gifts. Spread the word. This was written by locals after all.

This past Sunday was Father’s Day. As a result the media was flooded with articles about how Dad’s role in the parenting process is changing and how there are so many more stay at home dads now. There are other recent articles about Gen-X Dads.

What I want to know is…Where are they? No offense to all my friends (most of which have no desire to have children). I can appreciate not wanting to have kids. I have to say though, I’d really like to have some other people to hang out and talk to about parenthood. The last thing I want to do is bore my friends to death with tales of dirty diapers and the irregular sleeping patterns of a newborn. These articles talk like these people are all over, but I have yet to find any. The few parents that G and I know are through the mothers and I’m not sure I’d hit it off quite as well with the dads. (Not much in common. That whole Geek vs. Jock thing)

Okay, there are two dads out there that I can hang out with. But Connecticut and Georgia aren’t around the corner.

Emergency Town Hall Meeting
I received this via email. An important event in Seminole Heights addressing an significant injustice countywide. See Ernest Hooper’s article on the controversy.

Attend the Emergency Town Hall Meeting in Tampa - 6:30 PM Monday, June 20th. See below for directions and spread the word to others in Tampa. In an outrageous act of bigotry, the Hillsborough County Commission voted yesterday to bar county agencies from recognizing or participating in Gay Pride Month or any events that portray gay people in a positive light. Our help is needed!

Now we are hearing about similar censorship efforts being launched in other counties.

The policy is an attack on gay people, an insult to the entire community and a national embarrassment for our state. This policy is discriminatory and will must challenge it.

The commission’s actions came on the heels of a dispute regarding the removal of a display at the West Gate Regional Library highlighting gay and lesbian literature. The display was created in recognition of Gay Pride month.

Out of hundreds of library visitors, only three people complained about the content of the main-lobby display over the course of several days. The county’s chief librarian, Jean Peters, visited the library and demanded the display be removed. When the removal of the books sparked an outcry, the library allowed a much smaller display to be shown in the back of the library.

Commissioner Ronda Storms, a longtime anti-gay antagonist, introduced the policy. And despite the dozens of us who crowded the chambers in opposition, the Commission passed the proposal. It prevents Hillsborough county agencies from giving equal recognition to local events that present gay people in a positive light, including Gay Pride Month. To make things even worse, the commission went on to vote 6-1 to prevent the new policy from being repealed except by a super majority vote of the commission following a public hearing.

Before casting the only “No” vote, Commissioner Kathy Castor stated “Government should not be in the business of promoting discrimination.”

An Emergency Town Hall Meeting will be held this Monday, June 20th at 6:30 PM. The location is the MCC Church at 408 E Cayuga Street in Tampa. Take I-275 to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. exit and head west 1/10 mile. Turn right onto North Seminole Ave. and go 1/3 mile to E. Cayuga, MCC is on the right.

Happy Father’s Day!

Please don’t screw this up, please don’t screw this up, please don’t screw this up…
